More than once pulled the pan because it was bubbling notably but an instant read themometer in the middle of the depth of water read in the mid 80s
If you mean an infrared thermometer (with a red pointer beam), these are known to be pretty hopeless on lots of shiny surfaces. If I point mine into the water through the top of a boiling electric kettle it only reads about 90C. They seem to work best on matt black.

Is anyone going to test the cost using a microwave?

How the heck anyone can drink water that has been boiled in the microwave is beyond me.
Boiled is boiled.  It's still the same water.
i can't explain why but i agree with pennine that it really isnt. tastes plastic :(
Almost everything will work again if you unplug it for a few minutes, including you. Anne Lamott

It's amazing how those with a can-do attitude and willingness to 'pitch in and work' get all the luck, isn't it?

Please consider buying some pet food and giving it to your local food bank collection or animal charity. Animals aren't to blame for the cost of living crisis.

My  kettle takes 45 seconds to boil  a mug full .( Tower 3000 w )
Twinings should know a few things about tea and they say never pour boiling water over a tea bag or tea, leave it to cool as you do not want to burn the tea.  So I will try knocking off the kettle 5 secs before it boils to check this instruction  Only used fresh or filtered water .

I'm sticking with my 2000w kettle (I have solar and 2Kw has less chance of using grid electricity than a 3Kw) when I make a cuppa tea.

I'm also going to keep on having a shower even though a strip wash at the sink with 1 litre of hot water and a flannel would cost less.

There are some money saving ideas that are simply too inconvenient for what they save.

i've just started trying the gas hob experiment

no costings yet but god it takes ages to boil 400ml on the smallest flame setting......10-12mins on smallest flame!!!!

(using smallest flame to minimise wasted heat escaping from perimeter of kettle bottom)

are you guys boiling it in 3ish mins using a very high/highest flame?

Smallest flame is the wrong approach, in my oinion. You want to use the biggest flame that doesn't escape from under the kettle.

My gas hob has four burners; one small, two medium and one large. They're approx. 1kW, 2kW and 3kW respectively. I use my kettle (linked here) on the medium burner, turned up to full.

No, not sure how you'd measure the middle depth of water with an infra red thermometer? Surely it would just read the surface?

It's a long metal spike, normally used for sticking in a lump of meat but means you can measure the water temp at different levels in the water. Have two types, one thats a handle it folds into and the other on long wires that isnt as quick to read but designed for BBQs or ovens where you want more separation from the probe and the electronics.

To improve costs draw water the day before use and store in a clean and sealed container so it reaches room temperature.  Less energy will then be required to heat it.

Water doesn't spontaneously heat itself. The water in your container will be taking heat from it's surroundings. Heat that (at this time of year) you have paid to put there.
