It's a work laptop, you are travelling on work business, you need to connect to your work's corporate systems when overseas.
My advice would be get your work IT people to sort it out.2 -
At my work, we disable VPN access if already behind a public VPN. To prevent exactly what your suggesting. Were a UK only company and very few need to work from outside the UK. If this is for work purposes, your work should be providing you with special access to connect from outside the UK, for the time you are away.0

Where are you staying whilst abroad? How do you plan to connect this router to the network. Many hotels require challenge authenticate to join the network and unless your router can clone the MAC of your device (once you have done the challenge on the device then it is unlikely to connect.
What do you believe you will gain over having a software VPN on the device itself?
As mentioned, many companies block their company VPN's which are being tunnelled through a public VPN so unless you have tested this I would do that first.
Does your company policy allow you to take your laptop out of the country with you (I assume this is not a work trip)? I have worked in industries (healthcare and FSI) where if caught accessing data from outside of the country it would be a sackable offence.
A software VPN like NordVPN or Express VPN would be the first thing to try. If you are going to try a router then maybe one that can take a custom OS like Tomato or Open WRT that can have a VPN install on it and can clone the device MAC to the WAN MAC.0
