Car insurance quote question re previous accident

I am gathering quotes for my car insurance renewal, and the quote from Direct Line is three times as much as other quotes I have been offered...
So I have gone back to review the answers I gave to their questions. One stands out regarding a previous accident
- Did you or anybody else claim against your insurance policy?
I answered Yes but I'm not sure if that's right.
I was involved in a (serious) accident few years ago and my car was a write-off, but it was unquestionably the other drivers fault (as confirmed by the police) - their insurance company paid up (eventually, as they were a bit useless!).
My insurance company were obviously involved, but does this count as a claim against my insurance policy? (It feels like it was a claim against their insurance policy, not mine.)
Thanks for any wise words.

Unless you claimed directly against the TP insurer then I would say you would have to say yes, you claimed against your own policy, regardless of who's fault it was and your insurer subsequently dealt with it. It's an odd one though as you don't normally see that question.0

I would have said no if there was no lasting claim on your policy as the other insurance paid out.You could always phone DL for a quote and see what they say.0

If your insurers were involved then it sounds like you claimed off your insurance and then they counterclaimed against the third party which would mean "yes" is the right answer.The_Groat_Counter said:My insurance company were obviously involved, but does this count as a claim against my insurance policy? It would however be helpful to know all the accident related questions as presumably there was one before this asking if you've been involved in an incident, then this one about a claim off your insurance and then one after about who was at fault?
Ultimately if you are in doubt firstly be sure what actually happened and then speak to the insurer in question to see if your interpretation of their question is correct or if they consider the net position which was your insurer was reimbursed and so on a gross position there was a claim but on a net position there wasnt.0
