E: 06/11 WIN A SIGNED COPY OF THROUGH A FRACTURED DOOR BY LOCAL AUTHOR COLIN MELLOR (GU, KT & RH)
As a teenager Stanleigh Agazzi’s life is blighted by his father’s impatient and bullying behaviour when the boy does not shine at school. Luckily for Lee, as he prefers to be known, he has a few good friends and a loving, supportive mother. But a few days after he receives his ‘O’ level results, failing in all but two subjects, his father takes Lee by surprise, forcing him out of the family home and telling him he is no longer welcome there.
Thanks to the kind parents of his schoolfriend Georgie, Lee finds somewhere to live and employment as an apprentice joiner. He also meets Anna, the kind and beautiful young woman who sees past the traumatised teenager he is to the fine man he will one day become. The young couple receive an unexpected stroke of good luck. Far from being the abject failure his own father had expected him to become, Lee Agazzi is now happily married and a man of substance.
But some problems have a way of recurring in different generations of the same family. To his horror, Lee recognises that his own much-loved child is encountering some of the same difficulties at school as he did. And, even worse, there is a danger of Lee responding exactly as his own father did. Fortunately, her difficulties are attributed to dyslexia and, late in the day, Lee begins to gain an insight into the condition that has also shaped his life and family relationships. But is it too late for him to forge a reconciliation with his only surviving parent?
The author
I was quite shocked at being diagnosed as dyslexic twenty years ago, when I was in my mid 50’s, and some of my early life experiences have been woven into the story. This is a book for everyone, (including one suffering from dyslexia) but it has been typeset specifically to help a dyslexic reader – not that anyone else would ever notice that fact. The idea was that I wanted to try to help people with the condition realise they are not alone …and life can still be great too!
