Switching supplier and meter- should I get smart meter from old or new supplier?
My partner and I bought a garage earlier this year, a little way from our house.
It has electricity with a pre-payment meter, which ran low surprisingly quickly given the low use until I remembered about standing charges. I also forget I needed to transfer the contract until recently, rather than using the key in the meter.
We would like to switch to the Ebico Zero Green Fixed tariff on a debit meter however I think we will first need to get the address registered with Royal Mail, as it isn't currently showing on the postcode finder. We have a good credit rating etc, so I don't anticipate that being an issue.
In the meantime the current supplier, EDF are bombarding me with incentives to get a smart meter.
Is there any benefit in asking to EDF install a smart meter, and then switching once installed? I was thinking it might slow down waiting for a new meter, and make it easier to get the credit transferred/refunded?

If it is a garage, are we talking about a business energy tariff? Is the property on a single or three-phase supply?0

or is it a garage like you store a car in (not that i know anyone who keeps a car in there garage) just not right next to your house?Almost everything will work again if you unplug it for a few minutes, including you. Anne Lamott
It's amazing how those with a can-do attitude and willingness to 'pitch in and work' get all the luck, isn't it?

There's nothing wrong with letting EdF install a smart meter for you - and all of the old concerns about it not working when you switch supplier aren't really so true any more with the newer systems.0

My experience with EDF earlier this year (SoLR) was that a fully functioning smart meter mysteriously went dumb on transfer only to suddenly come back to life when I switched away to Octopus. Their smart meter team appears not to be that smart: when I mentioned normal smart meter data flows were showing on BRIGHT and on N3rgy.com they went silent and deep.[Deleted User] said:There's nothing wrong with letting EdF install a smart meter for you - and all of the old concerns about it not working when you switch supplier aren't really so true any more with the newer systems.0 -
Personally wouldn't want to have a smart meter installed just before a switch , particularly EDF, as getting a sensible final bill with two meters and readings would probably be beyond EDF's Commodore 64 !!0

If you want a smart metre you should get it when offered. If you change supplier there is no guarantee that you will get a smart metre from them any time soon.0
