Window will not close properly.

The double glazed window in our ensuite bathroom is not closing flush. The window is original and is about 17 years old.

There is a black sealant or insulation strip on the fixed frame and the moving window should press firmly against that as it does on all the other windows in the house. There is also a black strip on the moving window that should seal the outside of the window giving two points of sealing against draughts. These strips are visible in the some of the pictures..

When closed there is a small gap between the moving window and the sealant on the frame leaving a gap of a couple on millimetres. There is a slight draught.

The window does appear to open slightly more at the top than at the bottom but that is also true of all the other windows in the house.

I cannot see anything obviously wrong with the hinge mechanisms or the cams that should make the window close firmly.

How can I adjust the window to get it to close flush?

As a temporary measure I am considering adding a sealant strip to the moving window so that it fills the gap but I really want the window properly adjusted.

Pictures are below.

Thanks

A man walked into a car showroom.
He said to the salesman, “My wife would like to talk to you about the Volkswagen Golf in the showroom window.”
Salesman said, “We haven't got a Volkswagen Golf in the showroom window.”
The man replied, “You have now mate".

Just a guess but is the handle/locking mechanism tight or loose. Could be it is not pulling the window in sufficiently. Difficult to say from the pics.
  • 1. Usually happens when the black plastic slider at the hinge strut joint nearest the window has snapped.
    2. Can also happen if the plastic corner piece (e.g. your photo 4, lower left hand corner of the window) at the top or bottom (or left or right) has broken.
    3. Solution normally is to replace the hinges.
    4. Have a look online for uPVC window hinges and follow the guidelines for measuring and for left / right, top fixing to make sure you get the right ones.
    5. Replacement can be done from inside, but is better with two people to avoid dropping the window.  Provided the window glass is flat (not patterned) and perfectly clean, suction pads can help.  Personally I tie some rope around the window and fasten it to something solid inside "just in case".
    6. Undo screw holding hinge to frame while the other person holds the window.
    7. Rotate window and bring inside
    8. Remove hinge screws from window.
    9. Fit new hinges to window
    10. Manoeuvre window back outside with great care.
    11. Screw new hinges to frame.
    12. Hinges should come (but check) with new corner pieces.
    13. It is just possible, but unlikely with uPVC, that the hinges are riveted to the windows.  If so, drill the old ones out but you will need a pop rivet gun and some medium length aluminium rivets to fasten the new.  Usually 6 mm diameter rivets.
