£400 energy grant on empty property

Hi, I am due to complete on my house today, but it will be empty until January, then the builder will start renovating, I have asked EDF what they can offer me in terms of it being empty, but still waiting for a reply. British Gas have offered me £10.50 per month (which covers the standing charge), so I avoid a big DD amount to start with. Does anyone know if EDF offer similar, and where do I stand with regard to the energy grant, will I still get it via EDF? Many thanks

    Hi,
    you don't get a special deal for it being empty, if no usage then it's just the daily standing charge.
    You are on a deemed contract with whoever was previous supplier to the property, so you need to contact them first with meter readings,set up an account, then think about a switch.
    You should qualify for grant once you have an active account.

    The property should already have a supplier attached to it, if so you will need to give them your details and the meter readings first before you attempt a switch to another energy company. 
  • If British Gas did set the DD at £10.50, you will find the system putting it up automaticity as it will not know its empty, it will still base the DD on the usage history (called the EAC). Just a head-up as you may have a fight to get it back down again ever other month.

    No matter who the supplier is, you will only pay the standing charges if no energy is being used.

    You will most likely pay a normal size DD, have the account in credit, then you can ask for a refund, or lower the DD in order to use up the credit after the winter.

    Important to emphasise that you don't get to choose your energy supplier when you take on the property. You are already committed to use the supplier who supplied the property for the previous owner. Find out who that is, give them the meter readings and open an account. You will be on their deemed tariff, which is set by the Energy Price Guarantee. You should also qualify for the £66 per month Energy Support Scheme from November to March.

    congrats on the new house :D:

    if the builder is renovating dont underestimate how much electric they might use. also if theres water to the property it can be worth keeping on a minimim amount of heat to make sure pipes dont burst and damp doesn't set in. i think you will be credited the 66 a month to the account automatically but wont get the full amount as you missed october.

    EDF refund your energy grant into your bank account the day after they process it as a credit on your account.

    You could go onto a contract with a DD that is pay for usage rather than the yearly spread. Likely this would be the EPG rate so you would get the standing charge + any minimal usage.

    You should then still qualify for the rebate which depending on the supplier would either be credited to the account or refunded to your account.
