VW Tailgate problem

Hi

I have a 2019 VW Tiguan with an electric tailgate problem

It's a button press to open/close either on key fob or a button on the tailgate itself.

It sticks in the open position probably 80% of the time even with repeated presses of the button. You can hear the struts clicking as it tries to close. It always closes if I give it a little nudge to close. It opens normally the vast majority of the time. New problem only happening recently

Took to VW main dealer who did a software update but this didn't help. Took back a week later and they changed the central locking unit but this hasn't helped.

I'm going to ring to get booked back in but any ideas? The only other thing I can think is replacing the struts but they seem to work on opening ok

Thanks

Sounds like whatever instigates closure, whether it be electrical or mechanical isn't operating correctly.  Could be a faulty solenoid, a faulty switch, a slight misalign, a broken part in the mechanism.

It needs a proper investigation to know which side of the operation is failing. Up to now VW are guessing and its you who is inconvenienced.

Can you adjust the open/close limits..?, I know I can do it on my puma, I’m thinking maybe somehow the open limit has been reached so it thinks it’s fully open when it isn’t, although I would think the dealer would have checked this but you never know, have a look at the manual or ask in the vw forum, got to be worth a try..
  • Thanks both. Good ideas will have a look tmw. It's booked in next week so hopefully more answers. Thankfully under warranty so they are playing with it at their own expense (but my time and hassle)

I have noticed it does the same thing whether pressing the tailgate button on the tailgate button itself and the key fob close.

There seems to be a couple of reported issues with these tailgates.

The first seems to be linked to a sensor/control unit that's buried on the back of the headlining.
Somewhere no service centre wants to go!

Another, which sounds more likely is the soft close motor seizing or sticking.
It's fairly well known and I gather new motors are on a lengthy back order.

The manual tailgates aren't much better, the lock mechanism is prone to breaking on those.

  • Ah right. Interesting thank you. Hopefully third time lucky they will work it out but good to know this extra info. I don't mind using it as is if I need to wait for a part. I just hope it doesn't get stuck open or closed as that will be a pain!
  • Just for completion, the dealer rang VW for advice and they replaced struts and working fine. They chucked in a free AC service as it was overdue as well.

Good old VW.  There is nothing to 'service' on AC.
  • Haha well I didn't pay either way and I would have paid £139 if they said it was due 🤣

Turn it on, yes it’s cold.
    Service done.
Now charge the mug in the other room drinking his £139 free coffee.
