Electricity doesn't 'leak' like water from a dodgy pipe.crossstitchamy said:she had the electrician out to see how it wouldve been used as there couldve been a leak between the sub meter and my flat.

im thinking of turning the fridge freezer off for a whole month stay at my OH's take my stuff from the fridge to his. at this point i even turn my boiler off altogether lol.ariarnia said:business rates are normally a lot higher than domestic.
if you want to test your sub meter then the first thing most people recommend is to turn off everything (even the fridge. it'll be okay for a short time) for maybe three hours or so to see if the numbers on your electric sub meter go up at all. that will tell you if there is a leak or something plugged in you dont know about.
then turn off everything other than the fridge and go to your OHs for a full 24 hours. see how much the meter goes up. that will tell you if your fridge is using a lot.
not a perfect solution but an idea.0 -
i was told by an electrician that if a cable has been damaged or even been chewed by mice then it could leak lol .[Deleted User] said:

the only way really a cable can 'leak' is if it gets grounded somewhere. so energy will go from the supply to the earth. if anything is giving you electric shocks or conking out or just not working then that could be a damaged cable like a mouse chewing on it. the other way electric can leak is by heat. if a power pack is making a lot of heat when charging then its drawing more electric and the extra electric is escaping as heat. both of those are fire risks so important to find but not like a leaky pipe where a bit of water drips out and maybe you just find a damp patch or lower water pressure.crossstitchamy said:

shutting everything down and moving out for a bit could be a good idea to properly check if theres a problem with your meter (assuming your boyfriend is okay with it). remember that you would still need to pay the standing charge (which might be 60p a day or something on a commercial tariff. higher than the cap in the papers) even if you aren't using any electric.
but it's good to do the quick check for a few hours first. it would be bad if you moved out for a week and thought you turned everything off and didn't realise that there was a heater somewhere you didn't know about that was on the whole time still running up a bill!
if its seriously unafordable the other thing you could think about is maybe a different flat? somewhere you aren't on a sub meter. back in 2008 i was in the same kind of situation and my OH and i ended up moving in toghether into his flat (it was the biggest) to save cash. now we're married more than 10 years and have 2 kids (so be careful as they're more expensive than a commercial electric tarriff!

It's amazing how those with a can-do attitude and willingness to 'pitch in and work' get all the luck, isn't it?
