Electric Meter Stopped Working

When I got my electric bill from british gas this month it was for £49, I knew there was something wrong. I checked my meter and it hadn't moved since July. I phoned British gas and the outcome is that I'm getting a new smart meyer put in at the end of the month. What I need to know is how they will work out what I owe them. I've only been here since May so they won't have an average bill. Thanks very much

good question - has it moved between may and july?

I would guess they may just write it off.
  • It has moved, I gave them a reading in may when i moved in and another in july for which I got a bill. I did have a problem with arcing in july and the supplier who brings the electric into the building came out to fix it. I have since found out via google that this can stop the meter

  • They can use an estimate based on history (of you and others), statistical industry data and a few other things.

If you have accurate data in the future (or past) you can challenge their estimate if you think it is wrong.

I m not sure what you mean by  "arcing " The only analogue  meter i know which stops is the Sangamo Weston which occasionally sticks usually but not always when two or three 9 s align then it shows a blank tile with no number on  , eg 2099blank.
I ve found hundreds of these .My way was just to give the meter a good thump on the side which dislodged the sticking dials  and restarted the meter . Meter was reported to the supplier but the suppliers sometimes took no notice of the report and it was still stopped on my next visit
Very common for digital meters to go blank screen but once that happens the meter is junk
