METER NOT SHOWING READING

My daughter had a smart meter fitted some time ago. She is now complaining that her gas bill is to much. She tells me that she has to go off her smart meter as when it was fitted by I think EDF they did something to her outside meter so it cant be read.
Is this possible? I thought the meter outside could not be tampered by anybody?

  • Gas meter displays tend not to have live displays. She needs to press one of the buttons on the meter to power up the display. She should also be able to get an index reading off the In House Display.

Smart meters record volume in cubic metres. She should check that she is being billed for cubic metres and not cubic feet.

Is she confusing the in-house display unit with the smart meter? If her original meter was outside it would have been replaced with smart meter.

A gas meter display is usually blank and needs a button to be pressed to wake it up.

The in-home display should be able to tell your daughter all she needs, without the need to go and press a button on the actual smart meter (which is the thing outside). She'll likely have to hunt through the menus but I would expect it to give the meter readings needed, rather than only showing the more prominently displayed cost and energy use for today.

However, if the smart meter is sending data to the supplier as it should be this will just confirm data they already have.

I have a suspicion she's giving EDF the reading from the in-home display in kWh, rather than the one in cubic metres that's hidden in the menus.

Good thought. Definitely worth clarifying @Bobby4puddings.

Although thinking about it if the smart meter were sending the correct data to the supplier the OP's daughter shouldn't need to be submitting any readings and if they disagreed with the automatically sent data you'd expect them to be challenged or ignored...
