It'll be interesting to see how that 3g to 4g move goes.If you see how the emergency services move from "airwave" to 4G has gone I'd expect it to be a bumpy, and expensive, ride.0

I too got badgered almost monthly by British Gas and capitulated in the summer and said yes and now they havent got any to fit! Wish i'd said yes sooner now as really keen to have a play about with each applaince turned on/off etc.0

From a security perspective there really is no good reason why they couldn't have a fallback comms unit that makes use of consumer wifi to transmit data - workers across the government are working from home, via VPNs, on far more sensitive stuff than someone's electricity/gas usage readings.
If they were worried about someone somehow hacking the connection to remotely cut off homes (which I believe is a potential feature of the SMETS standard), they could have physically disabled that functionality in wifi enabled devices.
SMETS rollout just a bit of a shambles really.
