£66 energy grant - not received due to sub meter

Hi, we were expecting the £66 energy payment as we have a smart meter. We had not received this so checked with the landlord. He advised there is one main meter for the 8 flats in the building and we just have a sub meter. This means only one £66 payment is made for the whole building and will be split between 8 tenants meaning we only get £8.25 each. Does anyone know if there is anyway around this as we are really struggling with payments and this seems very unfair. Thanks

The landlord will get the £66 payment and he is deciding to share that with you, as you don't have a electric contract direct with a supplier this is about as good as it gets.

What makes you think you have a Smart meter ?
Never pay on an estimated bill. Always read and understand your bill
  • If you pay your electricity bill to your landlord, or it is included in your rent, you are not entitled to any of the £400.

There was talk of a different parallel scheme for people in your situation, but I haven’t seen anything concrete.

It seems a little strange to me for the OP to have a smart meter but no account with the energy supplier.. is that even possible?

I think you can buy the same model on the open market but it won't be smart nor will it have a supplier name eg SSE, EDF on it.

It could be fitted but unregistered with the DCC etc. then read like an old dumb meter.

After yesterday, that seems increasingly unlikely !

Yes, there are companies that provide smart metering services for landlords.

On the plus side, you're all paying a single set of standing charges. That's £180 a year that you would otherwise be paying as part of your bill.

If you pay your electricity bill to your landlord [...] you are not entitled to any of the £400.

A landlord cannot legally resell domestic gas or electricity bought from an authorised supplier for a profit. The £400 is a credit towards the electricity bill, so withholding a payment (or share of) could well fall foul of that.

Doesn't help the OP though, they would still only be entitled to a portion of it, but as QrizB says, they should have been saving on standing charges, which in the long run will outweigh the short term discount.
