Am I going to miss out on my State Pension?

A statement on the State Pension age is due to be published on 7th May 2023 and my 66th birthday falls on 8th June.  So just wondered how many weeks before your 66th birthday do you start receiving correspondence from them to set the ball rolling to receive your pension at the current age of 66.

I'm hoping I'm not going to miss out by these changes.

I don't understand what do you think you will miss out on? The increase from 66 to 67 comes in 2027 and 67 to 68 gradually from 2044 to 2046. The review is considering bring these dates forward to 2037 to 2039.

If anything it will increase the age at which the state pension is payable. May even say that in 2038 anyone under 18 at said date will not be entitled to a state pension from say 2090.

Could also say that by 2100 you will have to wait till 75 to get a state pension. We will find out on 7th May next year.

Your pension age is not going to change.

    Have you checked your entitlement?
    https://www.gov.uk/check-state-pension

then you should be very interested in Thursday morning when the September inflation figure is announced which should be the increase on SP given in April.
  • I very much doubt you will have anything to worry about.

Any change is going to need new legislation and is unlikely to impact someone so close to their (current) SPA.

My bet would be on anyone born pre 6 April 1970 retaining their current SPA.  Who knows after that?

Have you checked your forecast on gov.uk to see what you have accrued to date (make sure you read the whole thing, not just the headline figure).

I used the word “should” carefully. Can’t even say who’s decision it will be ATM.

I understand all that but suppose in May they change their minds and they bring forward the date of when 66 will change to 67 - I just wanted to know roughly when I should expect to start receiving correspondence confirming my State Pension before my birthday in June.

I checked my forecast ages ago and yesterday and it still says June 2023

CPI rate for September 2022 will be announced at 07:00 on Wednesday 19th. This is the rate next Aprils pension increase will rise by unless the Government does another U-turn!

It will not be changed at such short notice.  10 years notice is the agreed time frame for any changes.
You should get your invite around 4 months before the due date.

  • Your state retirement age is less than a year away.

I assure you that that will not change.

that statement (from a stranger on the internet) is more reliable than most government statements at the moment.

General principle is that pension age changes are announced at least a decade ahead of impact to give people time to plan accordingly…

Just looked at this and you can apply 3 months before. If you do not have your letter and you’ll reach State Pension age in the next 3 months, you can request an invitation code.

This says to me that you should get your invitation letter sometime around 3 or 4 months before.
