MOT Mileage Wrong

A car I’m looking at buying seems to have the wrong mileage on its first MOT in December 2021, its down at just over 12,000 when it has less than 9000. Dealer thinks / presumes it’s been registered on MOT in KM rather than miles, seems rather complicated to get amended from what I read online. Should dealership correct this before I purchase the car (PCP) and buying first car could I get dealership to put car through a new MOT?

12k km is 7.5k miles, so what the Dealer said is plausible.

How does the mileage stack up if you review the service history for the vehicle?

9k miles on a 3.5 year old car is very low.

If the Dealer does an MOT now, the original MOT showing 12k miles will still show - it will look like the mileage reduced if you drew it as a graph.

If there is doubt on this car, why not find another car that does not raised any concerns?

    No, it is not.

    Hi,

Not seen service history. I suspect the car is an ex Motability car, going off dates registered, and dates showing as untaxed from, looks like it, as perhaps approximate an 8 month wait for new car, and one previous owner. If that is the case it’s likely the dealership that is selling it, did the MOT again going off dates as Motability ask you to do MOT up to three months before car hand back but of course there is currently a long waiting list on there new cars, as they are extending leases (currently named driver on one, and we had a six month wait for new car) So the mileage could be ok for an ex-Motability, just returned one with 12,800 miles on after 42 months.

Have spoke to DVSA and it is a tad complicated for me to change, so feel dealership should correct this before purchase, and will discuss tomorrow with salesman. Will ask about service history also as of course mileage should be recorded on there. I don’t want any complexities when it goes for MOT in January 23.

And like you said plenty of other cars around so if dealership can’t amend, will go elsewhere.

This is my first car purchase, so I’m ultra wary.
  • My car is for a disabled person and at 6 years old Ive not got to 18k miles yet.
Check the second page of v5 if poss, tax class, Disabled.

I would expect that for anyone to change the MOT record would require evidence / proof to justify the revision.  The Dealer "thinks / presumes" might not cut it:

As here in the UK we use Miles why would someone put it down as Kilometers?

If it is a Motability car then there should be a Full SH with it. They were always hot about recording things in my day. The MOT at 33 months is all to do with Warranty/ Goodwill payments but if the dealer did another test for the sale the DVLA website will show both.

I don't think you'll easily get the MOT record amended but if the mileage recorded on the service history matches up then I wouldn't worry

If the service history is correct and you're planning on keeping the car for a while I wouldn't worry about it.
If the dealer did the MOT you could always ask them to give you a written statement explaining the discrepancy.

It's quite easy for the MOT tester to record the "trip" counter rather than the actual recorded mileage, it's happened to me, twice.

Modern dashes display lots of information these days, long gone of the days of a line of numbers rolling around in the centre of one big dial.

You don't get many cars that display both trip and total mileage together on their screens, you often have to select which is displayed and if the wrong one is up on the dash and it looks like a feasible mileage for the car, that's what the tester might record.

The first time it happened I didn't notice for sometime and just left it.
The secord time I checked when they issued the print out and they grumbled a bit but changed it there and then.

There is some more info here on changing MOT mistakes.
