Proof of marital status?

My late father's pension provider in France has requested my 80 year old mother proves she has not remarried and asked for a proof of marital status form, handwritten, dated within 3 months. We have no idea where or how to find and provide such a document, can anyone advise please?

proving a negative is always very difficult - no-one is going to say she hasn't remarried as they wouldn't have access to that information. - very difficult, the only thing I can think of is a statutory declaration or similar with a solicitor?0
