Energy Help Scheme and First Time Home Owners

Hello

Myself and my partner are moving into our first home in January (never owned/rented before - we both live with parents at the moment!). Of course this means we will be setting up utility bills.

I have searched high and low but cannot seem to find a straight answer to this:

Will we be entitled to the £400 energy scheme from January 2023 onwards when we move into our new home, never having claimed it before and never having had bills in our own names before?

If so, we will be entitled to the full £400 or the remaining 3 months as I am aware the scheme runs from October - March.

I am puzzled by this but obviously would like to know whether we are going to be getting the extra help which would be hugely appreciated being new home owners in this current time!

Any advice/guidance from anyone would be welcomed.

Many thanks

Lily

I think you will get the Feb and March £67

Just a reminder that when you move in / sign your lease you are responsible. You must ring the existing supplier and give them meter reads
Never pay on an estimated bill. Always read and understand your bill

Thank you Robyn, it is a new build house so I am not sure what to do in that sense as there is no existing supplier at the moment and we have no accurate readings. I guess I will cross that bridge when we come to moving in

You will be paid the £66 or £67 for a month if you have an electricity account direct with a supplier on the 1st of the month.
So if you move into your new home after the 1st of January, you will get the payments for February and March, so you will only get 1/3 of the £400.

The qualifying date for each month's discount is the 1st of the month, so if you move and set up an account with the property's support after the 1st Jan you will then receive the discounts for February and March.

Edit: cross-posted, didn't mean to be an echo!

Yes there is an existing supplier-   contact the builder.   If its gas heated then a reasonable guess would be 12000 kWh gas / 2900 kWh electric

Thank you for the tips, I have previously asked about utility bills but no info yet. It is gas and electric for 2 people. I am unsure what happens in terms of giving accurate readings, I guess we will try get a fixed tariff (hopeful) then be able to provide accurate readings after the first month or so of being in the house?

Just remember, fixed tariff means fixed price per unit - not fixed total cost.

The meters will be Smart as its a new build so no issues re accurate readings but read them yourself (we had a poster who couldn't find his gas meter for 8 years !) .  If the initial guess of 12000/2900 proves to be way out it will be adjusted whenever the supplier reviews the consumption / DD

Keep your own records in a simple spreadsheet.
