What’s baffling me is on my account on the BG website it’s saying my smart meter will automatically send readings to them but I don’t have a smart meter.

So, if you are new to this property then you may not know your usage  - your original question was whether submitting monthly readings would reduce your DD amount.

The answer to that is it might do if your usage is quite a bit under their estimates for you - assuming your BG account has the 'submit meter readings' button when you log in then you should do that anyway. Even if it doesnt currently allow you to submit readings right now, take a pic/note your meter readings as any accurate calculations in the future will rely on your actual usage and having a month by month reading will massively assist you in this.

I guess one question is - how much do you think it might be reduced by?  Thats a tricky thing to work out without your annual energy consumption figures.

As already suggested, the British Gas estimated DD for you is very roughly the figure for the mythical 'average' user smoothed out over 12 months.

A complete guess (I havent got access to my spreadsheet right now) is that your £221 allows for a consumption of roughly 11,000kWh Gas and 4000 kWh Electricity without you going in to arrears at the end of 12 months.

PS - You may already know this but British Gas will send the government EBSS money direct to your bank as a separate transaction and will not adjust your dd.

    hope this helps.
