Looking at moving away from BT as my contract is up in a few days and I'm paying way over the odds and they don't seem to want to come down much. It appears that Vodafone and Now Broadband offer some of the cheaper deals at the moment, so any thoughts on them please? Or reasons I should stay away from either/both?

All providers get equal amount of "complaints", and all providers get next to no (or very little) positive feedback. Make of that what you will.

As Neil says, in the end the network is provided by Openreach so all of them will be subject to the same sort of network problems. When it comes to service, that really only becomes an issue if you have a problem. Most people complain rather than praise, so you'll mainly see complaints and they'll probably be proportionate to the size of the ISP's or the number of customers.
We changed from BT to Vodafone in January this year and so far not had any problems at all, never had to contact VF and we are saving over £30 compared with BT with a faster service. In the end all you can do is take a leap.Never under estimate the power of stupid people in large numbers0
