Gas meter
Hi,
my energy provider is UW, they have told me that my smart gas meter is not working and needs to be replaced, so at the moment they are estimating our usage.
how can they confirm the correct usage if the meter is not working, how can I prove that they are over charging, we have yet to put our heating on, yet Octobers bill was three times bigger than September. Who do I complain to.
thanks for any help

If your meter isn’t working at all - so there are no readings possible - they will estimate and they are allowed to do it. You can challenge their estimates if you have actual meter data from last year, or if they replace the meter and the next set of measurements are less than their estimates.
Is the meter completely dead? Or can you read it manually and send them readings? If you can, then they will use your readings (and if they don’t then you can challenge them against their licence conditions).1 -
Can you give us make/model of the meter please? By meter I mean the one in an outdoor meter box - not the In House Display in the kitchen
PS I understand these meters store 13 months of data.Never pay on an estimated bill. Always read and understand your bill0 -
Hi,have you been taking regular meter readings, is meter advancing or stuck?0

Smart gas meters have to be woken up by pressing a button to light up the screen and show the 8 digit reading in cubic metres .if you do this and the meter screen is still blank then the battery has died .
Smart meters are supposed to inform the supplier that the battery needs replacing so the meter does not shut the valve off cutting the occupier off from gas supply .. sometimes the meter shuts down with a dead battery and the valve remains open and customer gets unregisterd gas .
They usually replace the whole meter rather than change the £15 lithium battery which last from 6 to 10 years0
