Fixed tariff and EPG query

Hello,

I am hoping someone can help me with a query. I moved onto a fixed tariff with Sainsbury's energy on 5th October 2022 (my old fixed ended). I was under the impression that the fixed tariff would match the EPG.

My new tariff is for this....

Elec 41.30 p/kWh (EPG: 17.85 p/kWh)
Standing Charge - Including VAT 48.91 p/day

Gas
10.55 p/kWh (inc. EPG discount of 4.43 p/kWh)
Stanading Charge - Including VAT 27.22 p/day

I was under impression that the Energy Price guarantee was set at apprximately:

Gas: 10.33p per kWh and 28.49p standing charge
Electric: 34.04p per kWh and 46.36p per day standing charge.

Which would mean I am overpaying for my electric by about 7p per kWh.

Wouldn't I be better on a variable tariff that matched the EPG?

Thank you,

Rich

The EPG effectively sets a cap for standard variable tariffs, and discounts unit rates for fixed tariffs.  Presumably your electricity rate was c.57p before the 17p discount, so it wasn't going to be discounted all the way down to the 34p average.

It looks like yes you would be better off going onto the standard variable.
  • Thank you, that was my thinking. I just assumed that the fixed tariff would match the EPG.

Do you think they will allow me to cancel the fixed tariff (they moved me on the 5th October) to the SvR?

I have emailed them and asked them.

    Thank you,

    They almost certainly will.
