I signed up to a 1 year fix tariff a few weeks ago.
 Oct23 it was called .
Had an e-mail today saying this would cost £1350 annually on the fix .
But if i paid them £100 to change back to standard it would cost £1250 .
So it will cost me £1350 either way although i thought British gas let customers change tariff for free .
Any thoughts on what to do please .

Ignore annual ££ estimations. Compare the price per kWh and standing charge based on your actual usage.

Are they really going to charge you £100 to change? Usually BG waive the charge if you're changing tariffs but staying with them.

So the fix is 4p per day cheaper for standing charge - or less than £15 per year.

The SVT is 1p per unit cheaper. Typical gas use is 12000 units per year - so £120 for the year cheaper.

Do you know how much you use each year in kWh?

Can I ask why you signed up for a fixed tariff after the government cap was announced?

    30/09/2022  reading 21330 consumption 1632 kwh .
    07/06/2022 reading 21186 consumption 6998 kwh .
    13/12/2021 reading 20567 consumption 4488 kwh
    03/06/2021 reading 20171 consumption 7999kwh .
    17/12/2020 reading 19467 consumption 3512kwh .

You’ve got two 12-month pairs there, that should be sufficient.

    About 12500kWh in 2021, or about 11500kWh from Jun21 to Jun22.

That would mean about £100-£110 cheaper on SVT just like BG suggest.

It’s up to you what you would do, but certainly worth checking if they will ignore the exit fee if you stay with BG.

Phoned British gas 5 minutes ago .
They will not charge me the £100 to change tariff . Apparently that was a mistake in their e-mail .
    BUT
They said they cannot get an answer from the government about what happens if gas prices go up in 3 month cycles after review .
They have no idea if standard variable rate will go up or if government will still support it like they are doing now .
If BG cannot get the answer what chance does anybody else .
They told me they had answered numerous phone calls today with some changing to standard and some staying on fix .
So now i need to find out what happens for the next 2 years on whether government will stop all tariff's going up or whether we get charged more when gas prices go up .
If anyone knows the answer will they please tell British gas
  • Who knows what the government will do, or even who the government will be, for the whole of the next two years.

We, and anyone else, would just be guessing.

All we know is that at the moment the plan is for nothing to change for two years.
