Have I got this right?

I decided to use Martins tool to see how much I should be paying Shell (we were ported to them when Purple Planet went bust.)

on the 17/10/21 I took a reading of:
ELECTRIC 43749
GAS 21252

On the 28/9/22 I took a reading of:
ELECTRIC 49027
GAS 22526

So that’s:
ELECTRIC 5278
GAS 1274

I input these figures into the calculator and the fact I live in the south west and it came back with

Annual Cost
NEW £2220
OLD £1880

Monthly Cost (exc. £400)
NEW £185
OLD £157

Since they finally sorted out the bills from the change over they’ve been putting the payments up. We started at around £200 and it went up to £297 and they now have put it to £376. I went into the app and tried to pull the payments back to £297 but they will only allow me to go to £302. We are currently £596 in credit.

I’ve tried to get to talk to someone on the chat but haven’t managed it yet. I sent an email and had one back to say due to high email volume it will be a while before they get back to me.

Are my figures correct? Have I made a mistake?

Many thanks for any help.

Looks like you have not converted your gas from m3 to kWh, multiply by 11.2 for an approximate conversion...

  • Ah! Ok. I’ll try that and see what happens. They don’t make it simple and straight forward do they?
  • Right so doing that I’ve come up with:

Our old DD should have been
    £238

    Our new DD should be
    £298

This is all excluding the £400 cost of living payment so I’m going to leave things as they stand with a £302 payment and £596 credit for the moment and watch what happens over winter and may ask for a refund later.

Does anyone else think this is the right move?
  • If it was me i would keep the credit in my energy account and set my DD at £300 - £350 too and review things in April(ish) time.

I just totted up your usage and pro rata'd it for a full year and I got to £3,692.65 at my local north west prices, so yours will be a smidge higher - giving rise to a monthly DD of something like £310+.  I didn't take the £400 into account or your current credit.

When I work out my own numbers, I always add a contingency amount onto my usage of 10% to ensure that if we have a cold snap, I'm not going to end up short.  I suspect that energy companies must also do something along those lines.  So if you kept with the £302/month, with your current credit and the £400 payments, you're going to be well covered.  I personally would rather overpay a little each month as we head into winter and end up with some owing back to me, than have to find an extra chunk in spring.
