Extending travel insurance by 36 hours

Our house insurance gives us worldwide travel insurance for up to 42 days. We are going to the USA for 44 days next year and the insurance company will not extend. Is it possible to buy a 48-hour top-up? I could find a 30-day extension but that was at a cost of £800+. My only other option is to buy a completely new policy which seems excessive and means I will be double insured for 42 days. All advice gratefully received.

I know of only two companies who offer travel insurance that begins when the insured person is out of their home country: True Traveller and World Nomads. (And my information is about ten years out of date.) Check the small print very carefully, but they might work out a little cheaper than getting a new single-trip policy.

You need to check with your insurers on if they will cover the first 42 days of your 44 day trip if you buy a policy like World Nomads to top up the last couple of days... unfortunately the likihood is that if the travel is beyond the limit there is no cover at all and so your only option will be to buy a standard policy to cover the whole holiday.

Thanks for the advice. I have contacted our insurers (Direct Line) and we are covered for the first 42 days but cover will stop at midnight, 35 hours before we land back at Heathrow. 
Both World Nomads and True Traveller have quoted for a 2-day policy covering our needs, (£168 and £126 respectively), at aged 61 and 62 we feel we would be stupid to be in the USA without medical cover even for the shortest period so will be purchasing one of the policies.
