Painting peeling wardrobes

I have fitted wardrobes in my bedroom which are solid and great space wise. The veneer is coming off and I would like to paint them. It's mdf under the veneer. I was thinking primer first then paint on top. Is there any reason this won't work and how do I remove any stubborn bits of veneer that don't want to come off?
