The IHD doesn't use the Internet. It receives signals from the meter over a secure wireless network like the ones used by, say, garage door-openers or baby monitors as well as wireless routers. What are the symptoms of it 'not connecting'?
- Is the smart display (in the house) a complete waste of time?
Not if it works properly, which most do from the start. The installing engineer is supposed to make sure that it's working properly and to show you how it works before leaving the premises. Did this not happen?
- Will the smart meter (outside the house) connect to british gas and send readings to them?
With any luck, yes. BG will send a request (usually twice a day) for data to the meter, which should respond by sending the data to them. With more than 30 million meters to be polled for data twice a day, it can't all happen at once.
