Internet in power cut

Our router receives power from a plug in transformer (12v)
If I provide a 12v supply from a battery during a power cut is the internet likely to work using a laptop running on internal battery?

Should do if you have a way of connecting the 12V supply to router.
But if you have a mobile, you can hot spot a laptop to phone if you have enough data.Life in the slow lane1 -
Depends on what area the power cut is impacting, and how long for.
The local 'green box' may not have power, or UPSs that last the full power cut
Likewise the local exchange.
Similar for mobile networks, the local mast may have UPS, but not necessarily one that last for hours.
Or even if it does, it may get swapped with many local users switching to mobile.1 -
Since you will be running laptop on battery, at most it will run for 8 hours. So you need to have internet for similar duration at most. Just use your phone as hotspot and get a power bank for mobile as backup.Happiness is buying an item and then not checking its price after a month to discover it was reduced further.1

Depends on your setup, the other kit in the supply, their UPS and how wide the powercut is.
Ours for a bad example is a shared system using an ISP's switch in the building and whilst I could add a UPS to our router the switch has no UPS so if the power is down to the whole building and not just our flat then that internet would still go down.0 -
You need to prepare a more robust backup plan for when the internet is down for long periods:
1. Pen, paper, envelopes and stamps so you can send emails in the post. If you already have a printer you won't need to buy a pen.
2. Print some photos of your friends, family, cats, dinners, beaches etc to look at or 'scroll' through as an alternative to social media.
3. Have a bunch of blu-rays / dvd's to watch instead of Netflix etc.
4. Download or print off as much of the internet as you can for when you want to Google something random.
5. Get an old copy of an Argos / Screwfix / Freemans catalogue so you can get your fix of online shopping.

How do you post to the email address? Can you use the post code?Op but seriously maybe add a bit more info about your circumstances snd what you need the internet for as that will colour the responses such as if for light entertainment use or maybe important control purposes.0 -
As a kid we actually found other things to do without the TV or power on. Playing games by torch light and a few candles was fun. And no, we never burnt the house down. No internet will actually make us all find something else to do. I predict a baby boom.

Yeah, I've not thought that one through properly. Maybe if I post it to my ISP they will be able to find the recipient?Heedtheadvice said:How do you post to the email address? Can you use the post code?
Reminded me of another problem, my Ring doorbell won't work without internet so I won't even be able to get anything delivered during an internet outage. Might need to get a knocker for my door.Heedtheadvice said:Op but seriously maybe add a bit more info about your circumstances snd what you need the internet for as that will colour the responses such as if for light entertainment use or maybe important control purposes.
