eon next standards of service cheque out of the blue after 2 years
sense check please.
post just came. in it was a letter with a single sheet of paper with a couple of paragraphs and a cheque for 151.27 at the bottom.
letter from eon next saying they didn't send us our final bill or refund us our final credit quickly enough so they're sending a cheque as part of the guaranteed standards of service. to make this right they've sent a compensation check. all we need to do is pay it into our bank and no need to get in touch. (no other detail or breakdown of the amount. that's the whole letter)
weird thing is that we left eon more than 2 years ago and i don't think there was any balance outstanding at the time. but even weirder is the amount. it seems really specific. what i found online is that standard of service payments seem to be in 30 increments. so what's added up to 151.27. other weird thing is that it's addressed to me but i thought OH was the amount holder (could be wrong about that but he's at work and I'm working from home)
they say not to get in touch with them and our account would have been closed i would have thought so is there any point dropping them a message or just accept the windfall (just wondering if there's any way at all this could be a scam and we get another letter in a bit staying it was a mistake and to send the cash back or something)

It's amazing how those with a can-do attitude and willingness to 'pitch in and work' get all the luck, isn't it?

Weird - I guess the amount might include what they think they owe you (e.g. £1.27) as well as the standard of service payment (e.g. 5 lots of £30 = £150)?I'd check the letter very carefully by comparing the letterhead with any other correspondence you've had from them, but even if it is a scam I can't see what harm you'd do by paying the money into your account. If you do get another letter asking for it back and asking for your bank details, reply by refusing to give them the details and offering to send them a cheque and see what happens.Just guessing but like you this kind of thing tends to make me uneasy...1

That is probably £30 for failing to sent the bill + £30 for failing to pay the first £30, then £30 for failing to refund your balance + £30 for failing to pay the first £30, and then £31.27 as the balance on the account...

yeah. i think i'll pay it into our app and keep the letter just in case. unexpected bills i can deal with. unexpected money being offered makes me suspiciousAlmost everything will work again if you unplug it for a few minutes, including you. Anne Lamott

Early Christmas bonus!! haha - But joking aside i would bank it via my app, but put the money into a savings account and save the letter, just incase anything happens and i would have the money to pay it back if needed

just had a response from a query email about this containing a 'final bill' thats supposed to make it all make sense but i think it just confuses me more. as far as we know we left eon in March 2021 to move to ovo. there was a delay because we were originally win npower i think and had been moved over and when we were moved apparently there was a problem with the readings but we thought it was all sorted and we were refunded the £202.84 as our final balance (and have double checked this) so what will have caused the reversed account charge? and can we be cheaky and say the bill refund was late but so was the bill so we should have 2 x £30 (jk)
