USB extender?

I have a fairly elderly piece of mains powered equipment which has a USB interface lead so that I can monitor and it control with some software they supply on an old Windows 7 laptop. It may only need USB1, certainly not more than USB 2.

I'd like to be able to do this remotely, about fifty feet away and preferably wirelessly although a cable wouldn't be impossible.

Any ideas about a cheap wireless extender (?) or could I extend a USB cable by that much?

USB 2 cables are officially only good up to 5m. After that point they start to fade.  They may work but no guarantee.

Beyond 5m you need to start at so-called "booster" cables or active cables.  This will allow the length to be extended to up to about 25m for USB 2.  Beyond that you're into USB bridge territory.

You can send USB via Wi-Fi, but it's still got to be physically connected to something, it won't be totally wireless.

It may be more beneficial to stick something like Teamviewer on the Windows 7 laptop and then control the device from that.  You connect to Teamviewer (or whatever) and then control the computer as if you were sitting in front of it.

I've installed a number of long runs of USB in conference rooms, the standard way is USB over ethernet.

Depends on your device at the other end so can't be specific without knowing but something like either of these could work:
