Energy debt

Good morning everyone
Hope your all well

After listening to Martin Lewis last week about engery debt it got me thinking
I moved into my properly in 2019
I had seriously health issues and was not handling my bills at all
I was with Scottish Power in my previous property
And assumed once I told them I moved they would just change my address and I pay monthly like I was previously doing
So I was paying Scottish Power my monthly payment
But in 2021 during lockdown
British gas and a bailiff came to put in meters
I did get my money back from Scottish Power in the end with help from a support worker
But it turned out my engery was with British gas in my new property
I allowed them in to put new meters in I didn't fight it or argue with it because this fault was mine I should of been more switched on
After getting some help to sort my bills and make sure the right money is going to the right places
But I was just going along topping my meter up weekly to keep the debt down
Then when I saw Martin Lewis say if you have debt that is 2 or 3 years old
Your energy provide can only take 12 months back from you
I don't know how true this is because British gas said that it doesn't apply to me
So I thought what better than to come get advice from this forum
I hope you can guide me on what to do if I can actually get the 1 year debt knocked off my 2 year debt that I owe because I can't cope with meters any longer and want to go back to monthly payments
But I can't till the debt is cleared

Thank you in advance

What you are referring to are back billing rules. They are to avoid a bill shock if suddenly a higher amount is asked for by the supplier.

In your case you did not contact the supplier to open an account and never paid them. The back billing rule does not apply here.

You wrote that you got the money back from SP, did you pay this money against your BG debt?
