My girlfriend is learning to drive and she's got a provisional licence at the moment. I'm planning to gift her my old car as I've got a replacement. I was wonder what's the best/cheapest way for her to get insurance?

Would it be okay for me to add the car under my main insurance policy and add her as a driver? Or would she need to have her own policy and add me as an additional driver?

Who'd be the main driver? Is the car only going to be used for her lessons?

I'd be the main driver though I'd only really use it for motorway driving as its a diesel. My other/main car in a petrol for local travel. The plan would be to use the car to teach her in and then when she passes her test, possibly update the policy so she's the main driver and the car is her main car.

If you're the main driver, then it's probably best to add her as a named driver on your policy.  Some insurers anecdotally don't like insuring learners, so it'll be worth shopping around.  But insurance for learners is usually not too extortionate as, by definition, they're always supervised.  It's when she passes her test and needs a policy in her own name that the cost will rise.
Worth noting, when she does come to get her own policy, some insurers will recognise any NCD you've built up as a named driver on someone else's policy, so again it's worth shopping around when the time comes.

    Alternative is Learner Driver Insurance.
There are others just search - Learner Driver Insurance.

In the event of an accident it will not impact on your insurance BUT as others will tell you check your own insurance first. Some insurers will not accept a learner driver.

  • Collingwood, take the policy for a year and once she passes her test she will receive a refund on the remaining months.  You want to be an additional driver on the policy.
