Hi
I was wondering could you use the silver blankets that are used in First aid kits and ambulances, I believe they keep in the heat, but not sure if they would be safe over a prolonged period.

  • Would that be cheaper than buying a product sold as a radiator reflector?  The blankets are made from metalised polyester film; I struggle to think how that could become unsafe.  Perhaps if a pet or small child ripped some off the wall and ate it then it could be a choke hazard?

The reflector that screw fix sell (£8 for enough to do a couple of radiators) is metallised polyester on polyethylene foam, so I'd have thought it would work better than nothing  if they are free.

The realworld gains (unlike the CH5 documentary last night) are miniscule though, especially if the radiators are on internal walls.

I'd just cover corrugated cardboard with catering tin foil from the pound shop, and slide that behind the radiators on external walls.

Radiators work mainly bu convection, so you don't want anything crumpled up behind them blocking air circulation.
I want to go back to The Olden Days, when every single thing that I can think of was better.....

(except air quality and Medical Science ;))
