Did you know that travel insurance usually only covers a small part of repatriation of a body? We had this situation when a relative died in Europe. 

It cost £9k to bring the body back, the insurance was barely half. Then a funeral in the UK, which can only be arranged once the body is back, and the death certificate translated.

My wife and I have agreed if it happens to us, we should have a funeral overseas and bring back a little jar of sand from the beach. Not ashes, too hard to get through customs.

Think about it.......

Is it hard?  My niece brought her mums ashes back last month and there was no complaints.

How have you come to the view that it "usually" only covers that sort of amount? From a quick look at some travel policies, the typical level of cover is a fair bit higher than £4,500.

No, because I read the terms of any policy I take out and would expect it to provide much better cover than the policy you took out.

I didn't actually take the policy out.

Many will pay out millions for medical treatment and medical repatriation. Death counts as neither of those.

Well, I've just checked my super duper 'platinum' cover, and while I'm covered for £15m medical expenses, I'm only covered for £5k to bring my body home!

Just checked my Staysure one - that’s only 5K as well. Not something I’d ever thought to check. 

And yes I do read the t&c before travel, before anyone jumps on me for not being careful enough.

I'm well aware of that - others might think they were well covered, hence my original post.

I won't really care either way if I pop off, will I ?

A friend’s wife died abroad recently. It cost £3500 to have her body brought back - covered by basic travel insurance.

If a loved one died abroad I wouldn't care how much it cost to bring them home, or whether travel insurance would cover all or any part of it. 

We're all different, but cost effectiveness wouldn't be on my radar.
