Any effort expended chasing around after the original cheque

No one is chasing the original cheque - see previous posts.

According to the BS  in a letter to the OP accompanied by a photo of the returned cheque, it was presented to the OP's bank  and returned unpaid as (according to the OP's bank) her account with them had been closed.

This was clearly untrue as the account is very much still open.

The account is definitely not closed, it is our main current account, with direct debits, payments, everything financial, and maintains a healthy balance.
Any effort expended chasing around after the original cheque is as much a choice

The OP has an absolute right to an explanation of this debacle and to establish where the fault lies.

What is the OP looking for and how much emotional energy is it worth expending on the matter?

I would have thought that what she wants has been clearly stated

I do want to know who is to blame for this catalogue of errors and move on.
Although I deserve compensation for all the hassle, I'm not really interested.  All I want is my ISA with a competitive rate of interest, and someone taking responsibility for errors which have occurred.

According to their report of the issue, the OP most certainly has a good case for compensation (time spent to get to the bottom of the issue, lost ISA interest, unnecessary distress inflicted etc), and for a lot more than £10-£20.

Let this be a lesson for the OP in future, and for others thinking of using cheques to fund their ISAs (or transfer to other accounts in their names). Using online or app Faster Payment, telephone banking, or even calling into the bank branch to ask for an electronic transfer would have avoided a lot of heartache. All ISAs can be funded electronically, and all current accounts have electronic transfer means.
  • About 4 year ago my. Mun being old fashioned sent me a £50 cheque for my birthday.
I went to the a post office in SE London and put it into an envelope and they sent it to my bank.
Well that’s what’s meant to happen.
It disappeared, Bank said not me and so did post office. Had receipt but still no help.
After 4 weeks as a good will gesture my bank gave me the £50.
16 weeks later it appears in the highlands or Scotland and gets deposited in my bank.
    So I got £100, sweet.
Never written or accepted a cheque since.

    @Bigwheels1111 It's crazy isn't it!

I'm just waiting for the building society to open, and see whether I can get any further with this.  I could forget about this ISA and put the money elsewhere, as a last resort.

But I'm concerned whether the 'bounced' cheque will have any bearing on my credit file.

    I need some answers.

    Wish me luck!

You can relax. A bounced cheque will not be recorded on your credit file.

    Sorted!

After waiting on the telephone to speak to the BS, I eventually spoke to an assistant.  Manager not available.  I gave her all the information - edited version.  Basically she refused to accept that the problem was with their side, however she said that I could pay in the money using my card.  I agreed, and typed in card number and all details.  The money went through with no problems whatsover.  I was surprised as it was for a full year's ISA payment, but she said it had cleared, and is now showing on my bank account app as 'not available'.

I then phoned the bank from which the cheque was issued to stop the original cheque - another long wait to speak to someone, but eventually go through and they have stopped it.

I will phone the BS in a few days to ensure that the ISA account has in fact been funded.

Thanks everyone for your help, very glad of your support with this very stressful situation.
