Help! My flights to New York have bee cancelled

Hello!

A month or so ago I managed to pick up some mega cheap flights to New York from FlyZoom £106 all in. I found yesterday due to 'operational issues' and congestion at JFK they have cancelled my flights :( I am absolutely gutted as had the whole week planned out with my mates and was so looking forward to it. I'm looking to book some more flights but they are totally out of budget and seem ridiculously overpriced after my bargain! Can anyone help?

The cheapest I have found are from American Airlines for £277.48 which includes a 15% discount using a mastercard promotion.

http://www.mastercard.com/uk/personal/en/specialoffers/travel/offer_aa.html

Alternatively I could use £100 of Tesco clubcard vouchers to swap for Airmiles and pay £182 in taxes & charges on top.

Looking to travel out on the 13 Jan and back around 18 Jan as this is when friends have booked for.

Sorry for the essay, thanks for the help!

  • The £277 fare is nearer the mark for the cheapest available.
The £106 was way out of line and if you Google you will find that the operational issues normally means no planes!

Sorry, don't have any flights details to offer, but was wondering if you have any travel insurance policy that might cover the cost of rebooking (probably beyond an excess...)??

    Good luck :)

I expect you will struggle to find something cheaper because you are not staying a Saturday night, which tends to be a requirement for discounted economy tickets. I think the price you quoted above is the best you will find at the moment... Good luck!
  • Thanks for all the tips. Will try the insurance policy and see how it goes! Zoom cancelled just in the amount of time they need to not pay compensation!

I am flexible on dates and have searched a day before and after which includes Saturday but still nothing cheaper. Think I will have just have to bite the bullet and pay the £277 :(
  • Zoom cancelled my flight back in November but offered me flights a day before or after. I found it was cheaper to book an extra night in the hotel and go back a day later rather than book new flights.

My insurance wouldn't cover this as it was the fault of the airline and excluded from my cover.

I emailed watchdog and they came back to me for further details but I was too chicken to take it any further (can't think of anything worse than being on telly).....

You have my sympathies but I think this is one occasion where you get what you pay for.

£277 isn't a bad price for flights, especially as if it is last miniute...

the cheapest i've seen at the moment, is around £230 ish, but that isn't direct, direct flights are normally about £50 more... mad innit, you pay less, to do more miles!!!

zoom should rebook you on flights, without you paying any more, as it is their fault... thats what i think should happen anyway..

fingers crossed you get it sorted..
  • Zoom have just cancelled my flights to New York too. I booked following an offer mentioned on this site several weeks ago. They have simply returned the money to my bank account and suggested I try other airlines!
Thats fine but what about my holiday and the plans I have made?
I haven't lost money but the disappointment and inconvenience is the thing. I don't think Zoom should be allowed to get away with this kind of behaviour, any suggestions?

Assuming they have booked them outside the compensation period, your only avenue is to book new flights.

Compensation period doesnt apply to schedule airlines. I am fraid they can do pretty much as they please.
I have known people cancelled hours before the flight with no alternative flights or compensation.
If you look anything like your passport photo....Your too ill to travel

The EU regulations apply to all airlines that are based within the EU.
