Economy 7 tariff higher than capped rate?

Phoned British Gas 3 times today enquiring about Economy 7 rates from 1st October.
I have been informed that the day rate is now 44.376p per kw
The government energy price cap for unit of electricity doesn't appear to apply to Economy 7 ?

There is no 'price cap for unit of electricity', there is a number widely reported as the national average cap for a single-rate tariff paid by DD of 34p...
... there is also a less widely reported cap for a multi-rate tariff set a bit below the 34p for a multi-rate tariff such as E7, and that is calculated on the basis of 58%/42% day/night use, so apply that to your day and night rates and I'll bet you get an answer below 34p... or whatever the actual cap is for a single-rate tariff in your region...

Your night rate will likely be under 10p, as that when it's assumed you'll run the storage heaters etc.

YOu can't 'double dip' with an E7 night unit price under 10p plus the day unit price capped at 34p

If your power usage doesn't suit E7 look at moving to the EPG capped standard tariff

Eco7 equates to a single rate on a typical user basis.    However, you are statistically unlikely to be the typical user and could be a long way either side of typical.

If you are on E7 then it is very much worth comparing you actual use with the current prices with provider.  EDF has a fantastic night rate but poor day rate.  Others can be closer the other way.  So, knowing your actual use can help you decide which E7 tariff suits your use.

Can I change energy supplier at the moment- the websites I've looked at don't appear to show any prices fixed or standard & say they can email me when they have tariffs?

You can change but not online.  You need to phone them up, and they check to make sure it's viable first.  You need to know your annual use in units at both day and night rate.

A lot of the rates are available online but not necessarily in the obvious places.
