Is there a difference between the original manufacturer's warranty on a car and an extended warranty
Is there a difference between the original manufacturer's warranty on a car and an extended warranty?
If so, what are the differences?
I know that consumables are excluded from both types of warranty, but are there things that are included in the original 3 year manufacturer's warranty that are excluded from any extended warranty?

If you mean an extended warranty from the manufacturer, it may be difficult to generalise - they will all have different Ts and Cs.
But one big difference is that with an extended warranty they can legally require you to use franchised dealers for servicing., which they cannot with the original.
If you mean a 3rd party warranty, the big difference from the original warranty is that claims are seldom successful. Allegedly.

Only way to know is to read the Ts and Cs of each and every one.1

Often the extended warranty is an insurance based product underwritten by a 3rd party rather than the manufacturer, so it is them rather than the manufacturer who make decisions on what they will cover and whether to pay claims. I have heard of cases where the garage recommends the work is done, but the insurance company refuses to cover the cost. Having said that, they generally seem to be pretty decent at paying claims as the manufacturers do not want to be associated with the practises at the lower end of the ‘warranty’ market.0

I frequent the Volvo forum and people on there seem quite impressed with the Volvo extended warranty. I was in the Honda dealer a while back and a chap came in with a list of problems he thought would be covered by his extended warranty. As he went through the list Honda man just kept saying "not covered", "not covered" and sometimes for variety "not mechanical so not covered". Evidently in Hondas window winding mechanisms are not mechanical.Tall, dark & handsome. Well two out of three ain't bad.0
