New to Crochet - Help!

Hi Everyone.
I would love to be able to crochet even if it is just a Granny Square and be able to do a few other crochet stitches. I have some wool and a couple of crochet hooks but after that I'm not sure really where I start.
What size is the best crochet hook to use and can anyone recommend a good Youtube site or website for an absolute beginner to learn from or do you have any hints and tips maybe?
Thanks

I'm also quite new to crochet, a few months in. If you have a new wool ball it should tell you in the band what size hook to use. I was told to use a bigger hook than the wool says at first until you get used to it. I started with making flowers, just search beginner crochet flowers. Pick a video, give it a few attempts and then if you're not getting on with it then try another one. You can always go back!

If you have a crochet friend, it's super helpful when you get stuck to have them physically show you. Feel free to send me a picture if you get stuck and I will try to help. No promises as I'm pretty new to it but I'll do my best!

The question you have asked is the same as asking how long is a piece of string

Im not knocking you, seriously Im not, we all learned somewhere and it depends on where you are in the learning as to what do I  move on to next?

I learned on a 4 hook and whatever wool was rescued from old jumpers from jumble sales 50 years ago. Now I crochet on a 1.75m hook using pure cotton making octopus for preemies

Bella Coco is a great start if you prefer following a visual. You can learn all the stitches with whatever yarn and hook size you have, drape and sizing for project will be wrong, but learn, make swatches.

I hadn't crocheted for 40 years, picked up a hook and found a stich I could follow, and a blanket was made

Im also a member of a few crochet sites on FB - excellent rescorces for ideas and help, the only daft question is the unasked one

Join a local Knit and Natter group. Lots of people who knit can also crochet. They will be able to show what to do.
  • Have a look at  attic24 website. Lovely projects and very clear instructions. U tube can give you any amount of instructional videos check out several on the same stitch...everyone crochet slightly differently
  • Thank you everyone, I will have a look at those sites mentioned and a particular thanks to Killerpeaty for your kind offer

  • How are you getting on?
Did you find some helpful videos to show you?
If you're already a knitter,  then you'll find getting the right tension easier.
I've been crocheting for 12 yrs and I love it. Please give me a shout if you get stuck 🙂🙂

For a really simple but effective edging (looks a bit like a rope edge) just google Crab stitch border- there are several Youtube tutorials.- I couldn't choose which was the best!
Essentially it is double crochet worked backwards.

Check it out- will give your work a really professional finish.

I did it the 'old fashioned' way. I got a simple book.
I found that was an easier way to go at my own speed with no distractions. It went stitch by stich.
Lots of vintage copies available online or keep a look out at any book sales. Some of the modern ones I found were less simple and went too fast.
I think Crochet cotton is easier than wool. It doesn't split if you stick the hook in the wrong place. You can get thick stuff so you can use a larger hook for ease while you are learning.
Once you've learned how to cast on and a few stiches you can make something simple which grows satisfyingly quickly.
I also found that when I wanted to do a pattern it sometimes assumed you have knowledge you don't so I second finding a knit and natter group or similar where people can point out where you may have gone wrong, how to turn an end to get to the next row and such.
Like cooking, sometimes it's the little things that make all the difference.

I'm left-handed, a longtime expat.kiwi and remember my beloved nana's despair as she tried to teach me to knit at my request.

I still knit 'backwards' without turning the needles for purl stitching and Mary Quant's crochet look in the 60s, my teens, was my launch into that - a jumpsuit!

I'm crocheting gifty animals right now and remember my nana's delight that I'd found my way.  She crocheted too, incredibly fine cotton and silk work - doilies, traycloths, beaded milk jug covers, christening gown edging/embellishment.

🙂Does anyone remember any of those?
