Scottish Power direct debit

Hi im in credit but they keep trying to take huge amounts out of my account. When I try to adjust the payment online it asks me for an immediate payment of £497. Im in credit by nearly £300. What the hell is going on? No answer to my email to customer services and they hung up on me when I rang them.

When was the last bill applied to the account? if it was a few months ago the "credit" may simply be made up of the carried forward balance & payments on accounts.
My FIL is £700 in credit but the last bill was June/July, as soon as they bill what has been consumed but not yet billed that credit will fall dramatically.

We have no idea if £300 credit is a lot or a little, because we have no idea how much you use.

When were you last billed, how much usage did it cover and was that based on actual or estimate readings? Do you have any actual readings? Do you know what tariff you are on and what price you will pay.

Direct debit amounts by themselves mean almost nothing.

That means absolutely nothing to us.  Context is needed.  It's not a particularly large amount of Summer credit for this time of the year.  About right if your monthly cost is around £70pm and accurately reflects your actual meter readings and not estimates.
