Custom Craft Table

I am in the process of making a custom craft table for my wife. It is going in the corner of her bedroom and will be 1200 by 1400. I acquired several sheets of blockboard for free which will be the legs storage and top. Im wondering if people have ideas they would incorporate into a top. She likes to do many crafts so will be quite utility.  I was thinking maybe sink in a long ruler on two edges, or do we look at a grid on. paper and then cover with a clear translucent cutting sheet, buy a ready made sheet. Any suggestions on suppliers or what you've done and wish you'd done different or added will help our discussion ( my instructions ) to try and get it right first time.

I have no ideas to add, but wanted to say this is a wonderful thoughtful idea, and best of luck!

In the interests of marital harmony(!), make sure she signs off on whatever the pair of you decide...

Long rulers are always useful - a flat steel builder's ruler gives both extra length and a damage-free surface (wood or plastic don't last).

Sunken pots for storage of scissors and other tools are best placed at the back of the table, for obvious reasons.

A self-healing cutting mat (as large as you can afford) sunk into the table is likely to earn its keep. If you position this to the side, it gives her a large, solid work surface which may be essential for quite a lot of crafts.

Googling on your question might have been both quicker and easier, if you're only after simple facts rather than opinions!

Marcon, the long steel rule I had thought about maybe routed into the surface or I considered a paper one under a clear cutting mat. the sunken pots is a brilliant thought. I agree cutting mats are not cheap but I found this site from a friends suggestion which might help others. https://signgeer.com/sign-furniture/cutting-mats ( a non referral site just trying to help others ).

A small hook somewher for a waste bag. I often use small plastic ones. Keeps the place tidy.
