I left my last property in November 2021, I submitted my final reading and they worked out I was £502.60 in credit and they refunded it direct to my bank account. I have a statement saying that was my final bill. Now nearly a year later they are saying I owe them over £800! They said that they only received estimated readings the whole time I was there. I have told them I am not paying as why did they not work this out on my final statement and then credit me the £502.60, which I spent on my new place as had an over lap from one place to the other and used it to pay both rents etc. Please can anyone advise me on how to deal with this as I think it is totally unfair to ask for this money now.

If you think it is wrong then calculate how it is wrong. Was the closing read on the bill the one you submitted or was it an estimate. If the bill you have now received is correct then you will need to pay it.

The closing read was what I submitted, Looking back at my readings I did around 6 customer readings and there was around 8 estimated, my actual readings were inline with their estimated ones and were not drastically different.0

For instance, they estimated on Oct 20th 2020 52523.7, then on 7th Nov 2020 my reading was 52540.00

You have a presumably accurate reading in November 2020 and again an accurate final reading in November 2021,dont know how long you were in residence outwith that which should allow you to work out if the £800 is reasonable or not.
If you post readings or bills someone here will likely crunch the numbers for you.
It's frequently a bone of contention but suppliers can revise bills and chase debt for upto 6 years,5 in Scotland.0 -
If you feel so confident to tell them you are not paying, then you must have very good evidence that you have paid them the exact right amount for your actual usage during your occupation of the property. You have this, right?
If you do, then feel free to challenge it because the numbers prove your case, not because you think they should have worked it out faster. Ask them for the readings that they are using to generate this £800 demand and see where they have come from.
If the numbers that they used to calculate your final bill were incorrect, they are entitled to produce a new final bill, doesn’t matter what words were printed on the first one.0
