I thought we'd be above average as the dishwasher and washing machine plus tumble dryer are on a lot.
Tumble can be over 1 kWh per load.
Modern dishwashers can use very little on an eco mode but old ones on normal modes eat electricity.

But some days it's 10kwh then others it's up and over 25\30.
When the AGA is not on, I float around 8-10kWh a day.  However, before I looked into it and reduced the electric we use, we were using 18-20kWh a day.

The main things for us were:
older American F/F  replaced with modern energy efficient American F/F using a fraction of the energy (about 2 kWh per day saved)
older dishwasher replaced with modern energy efficient one and only runs once a day in eco.  The old one had a fairly decent eco programme which cut electric back but I replaced it with a better one.  Approx 1kWh per day saved)
All items left on standby now turned off at the plug of via smart plug.   That saved about 2kWh a day.    Sky Q main box left on but the mini boxes used a lot in standby.  They are now off when not in use.  Microwave, computers, playstations etc all draw fair bits.
Most bulbs were LED anyway but slightly older LEDs using around 11w or Chinese LEDs (off amazon) which were using 2w or 4w but not bright.  Replaced a number of them with Phillips LEDs at 2.2w with a greater luminance than the older/chinese ones.
Lights not left on as much.  In particular outside lighting (which we have a lot of).

400/500W when nothing is going on is high, that's 10-12KWh alone! If that is your base reading with nothing in particular switched on you probably have a fridge freezer on the way out.
It's a meter by the way, a metre is a unit of measure.
It won't be this as some day's his reading are 6-8kwh's but yes 2 fridge freezers are going to cost.

The older they are they more kwh's a day they use

Of course it could be, if a freezer is struggling to get down to temperature when it does eventually switch off if the door isn't opened it could stay off for a long time. If the door isn't opened for a day then the freezer only runs a couple of times. On a day when it is opened numerous times it could be running the whole day.
A background use of 400/500W is going to use more than 6-8KWh anyway.

Bitcoin miner, it's always the culprit!  B)
  • Thanks everyone for the helpful suggestions I'll try them all. It probably is a combination of all eating at different times and a few appliances that are 7-8 years old and using more than they should.
