ATOM BANK - VERIFICATION PROBLEMS

Folks, I've got six bank accounts all of which I've had to verify my identity etc. and without any issues, applied to Atom bank and they can't verify me?? They use a company called credit karma, I logged on and I'm all ok there? Atom can't say why there is a problem and are investigating.

Anyone else experiencing this?

  • Yes. Same.
  • I've given up trying to open an Atom account.  (Fortunately another bank has identical savings return).
My 10" tablet has an excellent camera.  The 2nd step of Atom verification setup is for them to trigger my camera to take a selfie. Even with 300w of floodlight (and an excellent likeness on my screen) their app still says it can't "see" my.pic.
I give up - There's difficulty of setting a facial before opening the account.  The only way to access funds later is via the automated app.  What's the chance of a clean withdrawal on completion ?  Not worth the risk, can get same return elsewhere.
  • Same issue here - took 30 mins for an acceptable photo to be taken, first the screen wasn't straight, then the light wasn't right, then I wasn't looking straight ahead etc etc.  Then failed the ID checks. CS said it would be my credit rating, debts, loans etc.  - except I don't have debts or loans and credit score is above 800.  I've opened a fair few online savings accounts and this is the only one that's refused me.  Given up now, having wasted most of a morning going round in circles.

After finally getting the account open I started the verification process, voice , photo and was almost over the line when a message popped up with an exclamation mark saying we have found an issue and that was the end . They use a third party verifyer who must have decided I have some sort of problem with my finances and they will not accept me .
I got in touch with customer service who looked at the" issue " whatever it was and said they rely on the third party verification and can do nothing about it and thats the end of the matter.
So far in joining , and I ve counted them , every one of the 14 banks I have joined in the last 5 years have all accepted me with no problem but Atom Bank reckon they have found a problem .Problem is I can t find what the problem is .
The final word from Atom was that I can escalate it to the Ombudsman which I m tempted to do .

Has anyone else been refused an account with Atom ? .I am not Nigel Farage and have an unblemished financial record which all three of the credit reference agencies agree with and that is checking with Credit Karma who Atom use who found my record excellent and want to give me loans now of over £7000

Yes, and Atom investigated and said its to to with third party verification .Credit Karma who I checked with love me and deem my creditworthiness excellent and offered me loans over £7000. I also checked with Transunion who were the same with an excellent credit worthyness record .The other 14 banks I have joined also think I m a great customer and  have passed all the usual checks . No idea what Atom are playing at here , you would think they would dig a little deeper to find out .
  • I tried to open an Atom account last night.  They couldn't verify me, and now they are refusing to remove my data for 7 years, even though I didn't open an account.

If you feel it's a breach of their data protection obligations, and one worth pursuing, then you could go to the ICO?

Why is it important to you that they remove your data?
  • If they are hacked then my face, voice, email address, name, address, etc will be there for all the criminals to have a field day with.  Since I couldn't even start an account, I don't see why I should have to risk a potential nightmare in the future.
I'm thinking of trying Monument bank next, but I might have exactly the same thing happen there.
