Moving to a new house - best deals for gas and electric?

Hi this has no doubt been covered a lot but I move into a new house on 21 October and would like to shop around for the best deal for gas and electric. It is a standard size 3 bedroom semi detached house only 25 years old. I am not one for variable rates so any fixed rate deal would be ideal if that is even possible just now! I am currently with British gas on my old property I am selling but will need to set up a new deal on the new property. Should I just use a comparison site such as compare the market or has anyone got any good tips or deals still available for new customers the current climate?! I don't want something that is going accelerate in price in next few years ideally!

You will have to register with whoever supplies your new property

Remember to take meter readings when you leave your current property and your new one.
There are no current deals at the moment..just the standard Variable tariff
  • You need to set up an account with the incumbent provider before doing anything else.

They will put you on the EPG tariff which is fixed until September 2024.

You will not find other tariffs available at the moment.

They were fine for me but as with any energy company plenty of people have had problems. As above though, it doesn't really make any different if they're good or terrible to you right now. You have no choice but to become a customer of theirs when you first move in so you can then make up your own mind. Honestly I'd just not think about doing anything else. There are loads of things I'm sure you'll have to be spending time on having moved home - thinking about energy companies really doesn't need to be one in the current climate.

Ah ok, its weird we have been told to shop around for energy deal as with car insurance for years and I have held off and now when I would like to start there are no deals. So is everyone offering the exact same rates? I have noticed the standing charge keeps going up on my current property even if I use no energy which seems pretty unfair. What is the EPG tariff fixed until Sep 24?

Any idea what the unit rates and standing charges per day are for electric and gas then? It sounds like all providers are now on the same rates, must be a first!?

This is a good complete document. Suppliers can still vary E7 day vs night prices but this shows the capped rate for everything else.

Thanks that is very helpful and matches what they just quoted me on the phone. Now need to find out my current usage in my flat and upscaling it to a 3 bedroom house so I can try work out my new spend. I think electricity will be about the same but gas usage higher in the cold months as there are more rooms to heat.

Initially Shell will probably work it out based of a combination of the property profile and the use from the previous occupants. If you think your own use is likely to be either much higher or much lower than that then sending frequent meter readings for the first few months at least is advised, albeit it as we are now coming into the colder months, you may need to continue doing this past that initial period. Obviously that assumes there aren't smart meters - if there are then taking a reading yourself once a month to check everything looks to be in order is a good idea.
