Philips TV..Known faulty board, wot 2 do?

Hi everyone...I'm more used to the property board but thought you might like to help if possible!.
4 years ago we bought a Philips 28inch TV.
Last year i had some problems with it and had an engineer repair it...over the last couple of weeks though it has developed a 'serious' fault.
By surfing about a bit, I have discovered it is probably the painter chip on the SSB...(I understand this is a bit of a problem with Philips TV's!)
Apparently Philips are aware of this problem but won't 'do' anything about it.
To get my TV fixed I will have to send it in to Philips to get a new SSB put in...no-one else can fit one because Philips control their distribution and each model of TV has a coding requirement so Philips is the only place I can get it fixed at a cost of about £250!
The TV was £600 new and the first repair cost £70 by a 'bloke' local TV repair man.

Any suggestions what, if anything I can do about this...I am most miffed that Philips know about the dodgy SSB boards and, because it is out of warrnaty, won't accept any responsibility for it's repair.
Even if I did get it fixed, they'd only put another SSB back in (the television's brain apparently) and whose to say that won't fail too if they are inherantly faulty?

Any thoughts??

Only that you can get a new CRT 28 inch for under £200, probably not what you want to hear though. Sorry.

I was hoping for some tips involving customer services advisors at Philips and the words murder or maiming/pain.....
I think I have already accepted the fact that I have been 'ad by Philips and have already shopped about for a new television so know what I can get but can't get the vengeful thoughts out of my head...looks like I might have to put this one down to experience then and just boycott Philips for evermore!
It just gauls me that a big company has turned over what must be loads of consumers and there is no court of redress!!!!

  • 4 years is a little outside of waranty and even a little out of the bounds of sale of goods act (although before some smart alec says, yes it can cover you up to 6 years - but that is with retailer not manufacturer). I think it's one of those things, stuff sometimes breaks - you wouldn't expect a gearbox on a car to go 'pop' after 4 years but it can do etc.
