Cant move supplier due to volatility, what volatility??

Im hoping to move from Bulb to EDF who's EV tariff is notably better for us, but they are stating due to market volatility they are not taking any new customers. I've had this with Octopus as well, though that was some time ago. With the government stepping in, hasn't that in effect removed the abnormal volatility? Will suppliers start to open up again so we can get back to a bit of market competition?

I know very little about it all, but its a bit frustrating and I hope they start to open up soon, maybe its just the more specific tariffs too. Anyone managed to navigate through this?

You will need to make a phone call, you won't be able to do this online, both Octopus and EDF have been accepting customers all the way through the turmoil.
If you are aiming for the EV tariff then check it is still open for new customers as last time I looked EDF had closed their EV tariffs for the moment, but Octopus were still keeping theirs open.

The government stepping in has stopped the volatility for consumers not the market.  Given our new PM has miss-stated what the government are doing (say it was a max £2,500 rather than average £2,500) who knows if they've worked out all the back end parts and how the to consumer part of the supply chain will be protected if wholesale prices surge again... if it has been worked out then you'd need to look at the detail of how that functions as it may be different for new customers to existing customers.
