Getting Free Gas

Options
HI, I see there have been similar posts but some while ago.  When I moved into a purchased flat a year ago, I tried to contact energy suppliers to find out who supplies my gas.  Round and round in circles, pushed pillar to post, but, long story short, my meter isn't registered, so I'm not paying for gas.  I've kept a record of readings since moving in, I've alerted my lawyer to the situation.  I'm keen to pay for what I use, but don't want to have the supply cut off, or be landed with a bill for previous occupants' usage.  Any advice, please.  (Like others before I have sent emails, have transcripts of phone conversations, sit on the phone for ages waiting for a response.)

I assume the issue with the meter wasn't declared by the seller on their paperwork? Is the property a newbuild? If so the developer is probably your best port of call as I assume they should have arranged for the initial supply.

I assume you ARE working out what you think your bills should be and are putting aside the money to pay for the gas when it's requested?

I've had the same problem in the past with an old property requiring renovation, took meter readings, everyone said I had no supplier, leave it with us. 6 months later when we'd finished they actually came out and were surprised there was pipework and a meter already in the property, so they changed the meter, certified all the equipment and started from there. So effectively we got 6 months free gas usage as they said they had no reference point and it would be more difficult than starting from scratch. If we hadn't of told them would have probably got it free for much longer but wanted it safe.

It could well be that the previous tenant switched his prepayment meter for any old gas meter he could get hold of then disappeared

I have found this in the past as a long term meter reader where untraceable mystery meters are substituted  for the normal one which in flats are more likely to be prepayment meters which suppliers just fit and forget the meters. .
So if you do any searches using the meter serial number they fail to locate the proper address .
This is not an uncommon meter fiddle and can take a long time to sort out
  • Perhaps the best way forward is to request a replacement meter & hope that gets me on the system somehow

Did you try the link below?

If you don’t know who is supplying your gas, who are you going to ask for a replacement meter?🤔

Perhaps you should try to switch to a new (hopefully different to your existing) supplier and see if existing supplier blocks it. At least you’d find out who it is.
