In some shops you can now get cashback without making a purchase.

It was introduced as part of measures to address the decline in the number of free to use ATMs.

There are a couple of other initiatives underway to enable more retailers to provide cashback for the same reason. It might become a more common way of accessing cash, if the number of bank branches and ATMs continue to decline,
That's a different scheme - the shop in question gets paid for providing the cash and it's aimed for areas with poor access to cash via other means.

As far as I know, Tesco has withdrawn the service but most stores have an Tesco/RBS ATM onsite.

Sainsburys and Tesco have withdrawn cashback at the checkout from some stores - Sainsbury did a trial back in 2018 using stores where a cash machine was available and in 2021 Tesco withdrew the option from an undisclosed number of "larger stores". Both have remained very cagey about precise availability. Some stores do, some don't.

My local Co-op (Central England Co-op) certainly still offer it even though they also have a cash machine. It's a handy way to just get a fiver once in a while to keep tucked in the wallet for those now very rare cash moments.

Recently it was common here in London for people who used cash in corner shops for purchases would ask the shopkeeper to put the change onto your Oyster card (transport card) as credit so you wouldn't be carrying pockets full of small change.

That's probably dying out now too.

I got some at local co-op the other day when cash machine outside was broken. They could only let me have £30 as lots of people were asking as at least 4 miles to nearest alternative cash machine.

Many retailers used to like giving cashback as it meant they had less cash on the premises to bank and get collected.
However with a lot less cash being spent in the first place I expect its not worth it for most places as they just aren't getting the volume of notes in any longer
  • I think some of them do if you spend over a certain amount of money! Pretty sure Tesco do!
