@outtatune - As long as the screen is readable, I'm not too worried (I write code not do fine drawing). To be honest, the screen on the Dell isn't particularly fantastic but it works for what I need to do.
@Doshwaster - I wanted the one I linked to as, as far as I could see, it hangs off the laptop screen and doesn't need any extra desk room.
But, your laptop screen probably isn't designed to have other screen's hanging off it...
But a desktop vesa mount may help without adding too much real estate to the desk?

It would, I have a phone holder that works on that basis which allows me to video call via Zoom / Teams hands free on my smartphone (handy when my laptop decides to not play ball with the wifi) but it's not super portable, as it doesn't fold down to nothing, and needs a surface to clamp onto / stand on.

I think the device in the original post may stress the screen and when working on the move, the extra support is a faff, and may not always get used in practice.

Just catching up on the comments.......
    In some semblance of order:-
@Emmia - As I noted in an earlier post, it looks to have a stand to take some of the weight
@debitcardmayhem - I have about 3 inches of desk space left (it's only a small desk and no room to put anything larger in)

Just to reiterate, it doesn't have to be that exact item, just something similar to get some more screen estate.

What do you want the device to do - is it straight screen space, on a desk (however small) that doesn't need to be portable, or do you need it to offer you more space so you can work with a bigger screen on the move?

If its the former, then the VESA type stand would allow you to have another monitor / tablet connected that would 'float' above your laptop - the clamp versions would take up a couple of cm at the back / side of the desk - and you could get a better resolution tablet / screen on there.

If you're looking for sideways/portable then the device you linked to may do the job - but there are questions on screen quality, power requirements etc. If this product damaged your laptop, would your company (who seem unwilling to fund this peripheral kit that would improve your productivity) be ok with replacing the laptop?

@flaneurs_lobster Work are trying to give me a "better" laptop which I've explained is pointless.  I'm only using the current one as a jump-box to RDP onto my desktop which is somewhere in the office.  The new laptop will be a replacement for the desktop but will actually slow things down (as I've proved to my boss but the higher-ups aren't having it).  It's also part of a cost-cutting measure to reduce the overall number of devices. They'll quite happily pay for a new laptop but won't pay for this cheaper (and, IMO, better option).
Ask your employer to carry out a health and safety workplace assessment.  Laptops are not meant for permanent use but were designed for occasional or out of office use.  Fine, if you have them plugged into a docking station and they give you a full size screen but otherwise your eyes will play up and you will suffer cramps from squeezing your hands together to fit the smaller keyboard on the laptop!

@Emmia - I need something that's portable as I can work in one of three place:-
    • My home
    • My partner home
    • The office
I've got the same issue with space in both my home and my partners.
The only time I get a decent amount of screen space is in the office (which is only one day a week).

@Le_Kirk - I hadn't thought of that. I've got it set up to reduce eye strain (which was reasonably straightforward once I knew how far away the screen needs to be) but you're right about the keyboard.  I've got reasonably large hands which doesn't help.
