My parents almost always stay at Premier Inn, there are several in the King's Cross St Pancras area that I expect will be convenient for you.0

We live in Zone 2 but work in the centre and I can either catch 1 bus and have a 5 minute walk at the start and 10 minute walk at the end of my journey, catch a bus then the tube and the same 10 minute walk at the end or 2 buses with a 2 minute walk at the end. Most the time all the journey options take about the same door to door as what you save on the tube is countered by the getting to/from it and the shorten walk on the two bus option balanced by the interchange of buses.
There is also the Overground, DLR and TFL Rail, depending on where you want to go.
You will also need to balance out your time -v- the cost of the hotel. You can get much cheaper deals by moving away from the centre and in particular if its also a bit further from a tube too but then you'll lose some of your time travelling in and out from the centre plus the travel costs will get higher the more zones you have to cross.0 -

Watch a tv show being filmed, if you can fit it in. bbcshowsandtours@shows.bbc.co.uk
Your last one reminds me ... many many years ago my parents did this and we got tickets to see Up Pompeii being filmed. Sadly we had been to Cornwall for 2 weeks prior to a short stay in London on the way home .. the show tickets were on our doorstep when we arrived home. I haven't got over it yet1 -
Coming from Yorkshire I always book near Kings Cross when visiting central London because I don't want to lug luggage around London and most hotels will hold your luggage for you on your day of return.1

Buses are fine for short hops, but are considerably slower if your time is limited. Average about 9mph in central London, so use the tube for anything longer than a mile or so, unless you want to do sightseeing from a bus, like the no. 15.No free lunch, and no free laptop0
